Best Fitness Reward Program for a Frequent Flyer

2011 CrossFit Games

The best reward program for any frequent flyer is one that helps them stay healthy while they travel free.

I am a month into my CrossFit regimen and I love it.

CrossFit is a fitness company that combined the body-weight exercises and short recovery periods found in circuit training with popular exercises of Olympic weightlifting.

Cross-Training and Circuit Training have been around for awhile but CrossFit does add their own unique spin to the equation.

So CrossFit is a brand for what many personal trainers would probably be doing with their clients.

Now you have yourself a nice hybrid workout.

Kind of like how kick-ass Travel Abstract Academy gets you working on all angles of your Free Travel Portfolio!

Now I always enjoyed working out but I never really found my niche until I started CrossFit.

I started off just doing random workouts but I desired something more accountable for my lifestyle and personal tastes.

When I first started out on this path to finding the perfect routine that I could not only become a part of my daily life but be flexible enough for when I’m traveling.

This lead me to circuit training routines. Circuit training  helps build strength by doing movements that train muscles you will use in everyday life and will make those tasks easier over time.

I even started to combine the weightlifting and circuit training into one big routine.

But the workouts never really connected with me until I stumbled upon the CrossFit community.

After being introduced to the CrossFit world I found myself waking up everyday HYPED to perform the workout of the day (WOD’s in CrossFit cool kid slang).

You need a couple of screws loose to really enjoy doing CrossFit because it kicks you around until you can’t stand under your own power.

But I love that feeling.

I enjoy immersion in  program’s because of the  and educating myself on its strengths and weaknesses.

I think the Travel Abstract crew would enjoy it as well and that is why I am sharing it with YOU.

Why it Works For Travelers ….

1. Adapt to Anyplace, Anytime.

You know how hard it is to take your workout regimen with you when traveling.

Because CrossFit offers up circuit training as a key component in their workouts it is quite easy to do most of these workouts from your hotel room. Think squats, lunges, burpees, push-ups, sit-ups, planks and more.

Scalability is another keystone element to producing results. All the workouts in the world sound great but you need to do what is right for you.

If you try to do the same workouts as U.S. Special Forces team you will not be doing yourself any favors.

Scale down your workout to make it challenging without sacrificing quality. Trying to do more than you can handle is a quick way to seriously injure yourself.

At the very least you are cheating yourself out of results by not doing the proper movement of the exercise, making those extra reps more harm than good.

2. Community

Perhaps the most important component of the success of this workout regimen is the community supporting you.

The community is there to help you on finding substitutes for exercises you may not be able to perform, encouraging you when you need a good pat on the back to keep pushing and a wealth of personal experience that you can leverage to your own goals.

Having other people going through the same process as you is an invaluable tool and you can both benefit from the others scenario.

3. I hate gym small talk.

I am not there to hang out with people or make friends. I am there to work out and keep it moving.

Sorry, I’m not by the water fountain to hear about your dog, I’m there because I am about to pass out from thirst.

Small Talk XKCD

I enjoy the release of stress and tension that exercise provides but the gym is not a sidewalk café or dive bar.

Maybe we can talk when I’m walking back to the hostel or my rental apartment but not in the middle of a workout.

I love the resting-only-to-get-to-the-next-exercise-station mentality of circuit training that CrossFit also adopts.

Creating that continuity in my workout allows me to focus on the exercise and executing it well.

This style of workout will also let me get back to my trip ASAP.

Perfect, right?

4. Competition

Another important factor of the workouts is that many are timed or with time limits. This helps give you the last push to finish the workout strong and not slack off.

You want to have a respectable time and one that can be improved upon the next time you do it.

It is important to note that you are competing against yourself in all of your workouts. Not anybody else.

Imagine there is an overlap of your previous workout with this workout tracking how well your perform.

5. Variety

You can go months before your do the same exact workout again. This is awesome for some people and especially for travelers it will keep you interested.

Push-ups (41/365)

Perfect for people who get bored of having a “routine” and it will help give you a variety of ways to enjoy your travel city.
One day may be running for 10k that can give you a great introduction to your city.

The next day might be doing pull-ups, push-ups or crunches that you can try to do in a local park.

Then of course there is always the chance to visit the local CrossFit box (they call their gyms a “box” because they are super cool counter culture kids!).
