This past March, when traveling through Argentina, my Lenovo R500 contracted the blue screen of death that is the plague of all Windows machines. It was clear Argentina would be my laptops last trip and I would have to buy a replacement when I got back stateside.
After an exhaustive search for the best shopping portal bonus so I could earn frequent flyer miles for my laptop contacting the blue screen of death.
Choose Your Retailer and Miles Portal
I decided to buy a Dell through the AAdvantage program’s shopping portal. I chose a Dell because I loved their recently re-designed XPS laptop line (formerly Studio) and they have decent tech support.
AA has two unrelated Dell offers; one through the AAdvantage eShopping portal and another on their “Earn Miles” page.
The AAdvantage eShopping portal had similar Dell deals to those offered by DL and UA ; 2 miles per $1, 1 mile per $1 and 1.75 miles per $1 bonuses respectively.
The XPS 15 was $1500 before tax earning, 2*$1500, 3000 AA miles. This is not the most cost efficient mileage deal, 50 cpm, so lets check out the 2nd promo…
In the “earn miles” offer page you can earn up to 6,000 points and save up to 30% off the retail price.
With the second deal, for almost the exact same computer found in the first offer, I could earn 6,000 miles for $1,230 before taxes.
This deal cost 20 cpm for my earned miles and I would also be saving $269. For the earned mileage I would be getting them for 30 cpm less thanthe first offer.

Converting my $269 in savings into mileage, holding the 20 cpm cost, I earned $269/.20 = 1,345 AA miles.
Deciding to go with the second deal netted me 7,345 AA miles instead of only 3,000 AA miles in the first deal. More than doubling my mile earning power.

This purchase also helped me reach my $1500 spend requirement for my 100k BA Chase offer. After one purchase I am 130k oneworld miles richer! Now you see how this can be addictive.
